A checkpoint established on the ancient official road of Ashigara Pass (Ashigara Pass) in Sagami Province. It is believed to have been located near the border with Shizuoka Prefecture, west of the current Minamiashigara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. In 899, Kozuke Province, which was troubled by bandit uprisings within the country, applied to Sagami Province for the establishment of a checkpoint to check on them, and the application was granted. Ashigara Checkpoint was established on Ashigara Pass at the same time as Usui Checkpoint on the Tosan Road. In the following year, 900, passage was permitted with a checkpoint. The Shokado-ki states that Taira no Masakado ordered the strengthening of both Ashigara and Usui checkpoints in preparation for an attack by the Imperial Court's forces on Bando, and the checkpoints were considered important military and security bases at the entrance to Bando. It seems to have been abolished in the early Kamakura period, and the Asukai Wakashu contains the lines, "Ashigara no yama no sekimori inishie wa arimoyashiken ato da ni nani." However, in 1221, during the Jōkyū War, there was discussion of fortifying the Ashigara and Hakone checkpoints, and it is possible that temporary checkpoints were established thereafter.
