A low-temperature hydrothermal metasomatic deposit found in carbonate rocks such as limestone and dolostone. It usually contains 3-10% lead and zinc, and sometimes fluorite and barite are also mined. It is so named because many deposits have been found in the Mississippi River basin in the United States. It is also found in Canada, Ireland, the Alps in Europe, and northern Africa, but has not been found in Japan. It is often found around thick sedimentary basins containing petroleum and evaporite, and volcanic activity related to the formation of the deposits is generally not observed.
