1909‐2002 A French scholar of comparative literature. After publishing The Myth of Rimbaud (1952-54), he became a professor at the Sorbonne Institute of Comparative Literature (1956-78). His critical works include Comparison is Unreasonable (1963), which inherited Goethe's idea of world literature, and An Essay on (Truly) Universal Literature (1974). He also worked to introduce the thought and literature of Asian and African countries through his critical biography of Confucius (1956), supervising the Oriental Perception Series, and translating the works of Lawrence of Arabia.
