Located in the southern Philippines, at the northern end of the Sulu Archipelago, it is the largest island in the archipelago. It has an area of 1,282 km2. It lies 17 km off the coast of Zamboanga City and is a polygenetic volcanic island with 20 peaks in addition to Mount Basilan (1,011 m above sea level). The indigenous people are the Islamized Yakan people, and it only came under the control of the central government in the 20th century. Although it lacks flat land, the gentle slopes at the foot of the mountains, the small river valleys, and the coastal lowlands have deposits of weathered fertile soil, and rubber plantations can be seen there.
