Basilan Island (English spelling)

Japanese: バシラン[島]（英語表記）Basilan Island

Located in the southern Philippines, at the northern end of the Sulu Archipelago, it is the largest island in the archipelago. It has an area of 1,282 km2. It lies 17 km off the coast of Zamboanga City and is a polygenetic volcanic island with 20 peaks in addition to Mount Basilan (1,011 m above sea level). The indigenous people are the Islamized Yakan people, and it only came under the control of the central government in the 20th century. Although it lacks flat land, the gentle slopes at the foot of the mountains, the small river valleys, and the coastal lowlands have deposits of weathered fertile soil, and rubber plantations can be seen there.

フィリピン南部，スールー諸島北端に位置し，諸島中最大の島。面積1282km2。サンボアンガ市の沖合17kmの地点に浮かび，最高峰バシラン山(標高1011m)のほかに20ヵ所にも及ぶ山頂が認められる複成火山島である。原住民はイスラム化したヤカン族で，中央政府の支配下に入ったのは20世紀に入ってからである。平坦地に欠けるが，山麓緩斜面，小河谷，沿岸低地には風化の進んだ沃土の堆積があり，ゴムのプランテーションがみられる。
