Geese

Geese
A general term for birds such as the Anser and Branta genus of Anatidae. It also includes the Cereopsis genus, which lives in southern Australia. Other birds with the name "gan goose" include the Lesser Spotted Geese and the Pea Geese, but these are not included in the general term "geese". All geese recorded in Japan breed in the Northern Hemisphere, but they do not breed in Japan. However, Japan is a very important wintering ground for geese, especially those that breed in eastern Eurasia. Eleven species have migrated to Japan so far: the Brown Goose, Branta, Swan Goose, Great Tit Goose, Canada Goose, Greylag Goose, Snow Goose, Bean Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, Imperial Goose, and Bar-headed Goose. In recent years, the Bean Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, and Branta Geese have made up the majority of the population. These species are designated as national natural monuments, and the number of wintering birds, except for the Brant Goose, is very large. (→ Anatidae, migratory birds)
