Higher fatty acids - Higher fatty acids

A chain monocarboxylic acid with a large molecular weight. In other words, it refers to one with 6 or more carbon atoms. Most saturated acids are solid, but many unsaturated acids are liquid. They are insoluble in water, but easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, carbon tetrachloride, and benzene. Branched acids are more soluble than straight-chain acids. They undergo dehydration condensation with alcohols to form fats and oils, and waxes. In industry, they are widely used as raw materials for the synthesis of surfactants and organic compounds. 鎖状モノカルボン酸のなかで分子量の大きいもの．すなわち，炭素数が6以上のものをさす．飽和酸はほとんどが固体であるが，不飽和酸の多くは液体である．水に不溶，エタノール，エーテル，四塩化炭素，ベンゼンなどの有機溶媒に易溶．分枝酸は直鎖酸よりも溶解性がよい．アルコール類と脱水縮合して，油脂，ろうを構成する．工業的には，界面活性剤，有機化合物の合成原料として広く用いられる．[別用語参照]脂肪酸
