Omokage - Omokage

Japanese: 於母影 - おもかげ
Omokage - Omokage

This is a collection of translated poems by the literary group Shinsei-sha (SSS), which consisted of Mori Ogai and his associates Koganei Kimiko, Ochiai Naobumi, Inoue Michiyasu, and others. It was published in the "Moshiogusa" column in the summer supplement of the magazine Kokumin no Tomo, issued in August 1889 (Meiji 22). When it was included in Ogai's collection of original and translated works, Minawashu (1892), two more poems were added, bringing the total to 19. Poems by poets such as Goethe's "Mignon's Song," which begins with "The lemon trees blossom in the grove, / The golden tangerines ripen on their branches," and Shakespeare's "Oferia's Song," which begins with the 7-5 rhythm of "Which one is your lover / How should I know," solidify romantic sentiments in beautiful words, and had a great influence on young people of the Meiji era, such as Kitamura Tokoku and Shimazaki Toson. The translations are also experimental attempts with a diverse aesthetic background, such as translations into Chinese poetry and attempts to transplant rhythm. This is a groundbreaking collection of translated poems that heralded the beginning of modern lyric poetry.
