Named after its discoverer, LL Jacobson (1783-1843), it is also called the vomeronasal organ. It is a pouch-like olfactory organ formed by a part of the nasal cavity of terrestrial quadrupeds that bulges on both sides, and is innervated by the vomeronasal nerve extending from the accessory olfactory bulb, located on the medial side of the posterior part of the olfactory bulb. It is usually a cecum, and in amphibians it opens into the nasal cavity, while in reptiles and many mammals it opens into the oral cavity through the nasopalatine duct. In snakes and lizards, tears flow from the lacrimal duct into Jacobson's organ, moistening its inner wall (Figure). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
