An evergreen tall tree of the Casuarinae family with a unique branch shape resembling an enlarged horsetail. A dicotyledonous plant native to Australia. Also known as Ogasawara pine. The twigs are thin and gray-green with many thin vertical grooves and prominent knots. The leaves are small and scale-like, arranged in whorls of 9 to 12 leaves, which are fused together at the base to form a sheath around the node. Monoecious. A long and slender male inflorescence is borne at the end of the branch, and a male flower consisting of one stamen surrounded by two bracts and two perianths is borne in the axil of the bract whorl. The female flower forms an almost spherical inflorescence at the end of a short stalk, and one pistil is enclosed in two bracts in the axil of the bract.
