A classical scholar and poet of the Kamakura period. His Buddhist name was Kakuin. He was the son of Kawachi no Kami Minamoto no Mitsuyuki. He is famous as a scholar of Genji who took over his father's work and perfected the so-called Kawachi version of The Tale of Genji. He was a Shikibu no Daifu (master of the Imperial Court) and Kawachi no Kami. He served the Kamakura shogunate from before the Jokyu War in 1221, and served as the waka magistrate for three generations: Sanetomo, Yoritsune, and Munetaka. During the Jokyu War, he pleaded for the life of his father Mitsuyuki, who had joined the Imperial Court's side, and was granted it. He also had dealings with poets in Kyoto, including Fujiwara no Teika. In addition to The Tale of Genji, he also collated and copied the Manyoshu, collated and copied other classics such as the Kokinshu and Shin Kokinshu, and wrote the commentary on The Tale of Genji, Suigensho (lost), making a great achievement as a classical scholar living in Kamakura. As a poet, he had six poems included in imperial anthologies such as Zokugosenshu. He also had many of his poems included in the Shin Wakashu and Tosen Waka Rokujo, and appears to have been an important figure among the waka instructors in the Kanto region.
