〘noun〙① A position that values and focuses on the form of things, and neglects or ignores the content. Also, the idea. Formalism. ※Literary Man as a Critic of Civilization (1901)〈Takayama Chogyu〉3 "The civilization of the late 19th century had indeed fallen into formalism and expedientism."② In philosophy, Kant's critical idealist position that seeks the basis of objectivity in cognition in subjectivity. ③ In ethics, Kant's position that bases the universal validity of morality on the purely formal moral law (categorical imperative) of practical reason. ④ In aesthetics, the position of Herbart and others who seek to find value in aesthetic principles and unifying action in expression rather than in the conceptual understanding of the content of the work of art itself. ⑤ In mathematics, Hilbert's position that a mathematical theory is nothing more than the totality of strings of symbols obtained by transforming certain strings of symbols according to certain rules.

〘名〙① ものごとの形式を重んじてそれにこだわり、内容を軽視もしくは無視する立場。また、その考え。形式論。※文明批評家としての文学者（1901）〈高山樗牛〉三「実に形式主義、方便主義に堕落せる十九世紀末の文明と」② 哲学で、認識の客観性の根拠を主観に求めるカントの批判的観念論の立場。③ 倫理学で、道徳の普遍妥当性の根拠を実践理性の純粋形式的な道徳法則（定言的命令）におくカントの立場。④ 美学で、芸術作品の内容そのものの観念的把握よりも、表現上の美的原理や統一作用に価値を見出そうとするヘルバルトらの立場。⑤ 数学で、数学の理論とは、ある種の記号の列を一定の規則に従って変形することにより得られる記号の列の総体に他ならないとするヒルベルトの立場。
