Nobuo Ayukawa

Japanese: 鮎川信夫 - あゆかわのぶお
Nobuo Ayukawa

Poet. Born on August 23, 1920 in Koishikawa, Tokyo. His real name was Ryuichi Uemura. He went on to study English at Waseda University, and in 1939 (Showa 14), he founded the poetry magazine Arechi (Arechi) with Yoshinobu Morikawa and others. After dropping out of university in 1942, he enlisted in the Seventh Eastern Regiment. In 1945 (Showa 20), while at a sanatorium for wounded soldiers in Fukui, he wrote Wartime Notes (published in 1965), which is said to be an ideological testimony of the war generation. His work The Dead Man, published in 1947, announced the start of his postwar poetry and established his position in the poetry world. In the same year, he founded the poetry magazine Arechi (Arechi) (2nd edition) with Taro Kitamura, Ryuichi Tamura, and Toyichiro Miyoshi (published the following year with the 6th issue in 1948). In 1951, he began publishing the anthology "Wasteland Poetry Collection," which begins with his famous manifesto "Dedication to X," which states that "the present day is a wasteland." In 1955, he published "Nobuo Ayukawa Collected Poems," and in 1965, he published "Nobuo Ayukawa Complete Poetry Collection," a collection of all his works, which clarified the essence of postwar poetry. His collection of poems, "Shukurerinko" (1978), is a masterpiece that focuses on personal transformation. "Nobuo Ayukawa Collected Works" clearly traces the thoughts of a poet who lived through a turbulent era. He passed away on October 17, 1986.
