Paper coated with a heat-sensitive layer containing chemicals that change color when heat is applied. It is also simply called thermal paper. It is rapidly growing as a recording material for faxes and printers because it can be easily recorded with only the heat energy from a thermal head that acts as a heated pen, and can be combined with electronic devices. In Japan, production and sales began in 1971, but compared to carbonless paper (pressure-sensitive copying paper), the amount consumed is far less. Like carbonless paper, it uses a two-component reaction to develop color, with a colorless leuco dye (such as crystal violet lactone) that has electron-donating properties and an electron-accepting developer (phenolic acidic substance) finely divided and coated with a binder.
