House of Welser - Welser

Japanese: ウェルザー家 - ウェルザーけ(英語表記)Welser
House of Welser - Welser
An old Augsburg city noble family, the second largest German financial family after the Fuggers. Engaged in Italian trade since 1368. In 1473, Lucas Welser formed a trading company with his three brothers, and his son Anton joined his wife's father, the Föhlin family, and established the Welser-Föhlin firm in 1498. He accumulated great wealth mainly through commercial activities and lent money to the Habsburgs, but even when the Fuggers became usury capitalists, he continued to work hard on commercial activities. In 1505, he attempted East Indies trade with Lisbon as his base, and after Anton's death, Bartholomew advanced into the New World, managing the copper mines of Haiti and colonizing Venezuela, but failed. In the second half of the 16th century, the family gradually declined due to the bankruptcy of the Habsburgs and Spanish royal families, and went bankrupt in 1614. The family split into the Nuremberg Welser family and the Ulm Welser family, the former of which was an important merchant and capitalist family and continued to exist as an old family until the 19th century, while the latter was also active until recently.
