〘Noun〙 (coca originally Quechua) A shrub of the Coca family. Native to Peru and Bolivia, it is cultivated in South America, Southeast Asia, and other regions. The stems are purple-brown and reach a height of two to three meters. The leaves are leathery and elliptical, measuring three to nine centimeters in length. In early summer, pale yellow, five-petaled flowers about five millimeters in diameter grow in clusters in the leaf axils . The fruit is oblong, triangular, and red when ripe. Cocaine is extracted from the leaves. Coca tree. 〘名〙 (coca 元来はケチュア語) コカノキ科の低木。ペルーおよびボリビア原産で、南米、東南アジアなどで栽植される。茎は紫褐色で高さ二~三メートルになる。葉は革質で長さ三~九センチメートルになる楕円形。初夏、葉腋(ようえき)に径五ミリメートルぐらいの淡黄色の五弁花を叢生。果実は長楕円状で三稜があり紅色に熟す。葉からコカインをとる。コカの木。〔英和商業新辞彙(1904)〕
