A state in which normally developed intelligence is permanently impaired due to an organic brain disease. It is to be distinguished from mental retardation. In addition to paralytic dementia caused by brain lesions due to syphilis, alcoholic dementia seen in the final stages of chronic alcoholism, and senile dementia due to old age, there are also epileptic dementia, arteriosclerotic dementia, and dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. In today's rapidly aging society, the increase in senile dementia and the care required for it have become a serious social problem. In addition, the term "dementia" was changed to "cognitive disorder" in 2005.

正常に発達した知能が脳の器質的疾患のため永続的に低下した状態。精神発達遅滞とは区別される。梅毒による脳病変が原因の麻痺(まひ)性痴呆，慢性アルコール中毒の末期にみられるアルコール性痴呆，老衰による老人性認知症のほか，てんかん性痴呆，動脈硬化性痴呆，アルツハイマー病によるものなどがあるが，高齢化が著しい現代，特に老年（人）性痴呆の増加とその介護が重大な社会問題となっている。なお2005年から〈痴呆〉の呼称は〈認知症〉に改められた。
