An evergreen shrub of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). 30-80 cm tall. The roots are slightly swollen and fleshy. The leaves consist of three leaflets. The leaflets are thick, glossy on the upper surface, elliptical, and 5-8 cm long. In July, a raceme appears at the tip of the stem, and produces many white, butterfly-shaped flowers about 1 cm long. The legumes are elliptical, about 1.5 cm long, slightly fleshy, ripen black-purple, and contain one large seed. It grows in evergreen forests in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of Ibaraki Prefecture, and is distributed in central mainland China. The name means "pittosporum tobira (evergreen shrub of the Pittosporum family) growing in deep mountains," and comes from the resemblance of the leaf shape and gloss to the Pittosporum tobira.
