Canaanites

The inhabitants had become highly mixed by the end of the ancient period, and the oldest known inhabitants were the Canaanites, a Northwest Semitic people, but it is unclear when they arrived in the area. The etymology of the word Canaanite in the Old Testament is thought to be Kinaḫḫu, which appears in the Amarna Tablets of the 14th century BC, and means "crimson" or "copper-red," and is said to be derived from the color of a dye unique to the region or the skin color of the inhabitants. …
