A North American Indian tribe with a grassland culture. Together with other Siouan tribes, they migrated west from the Atlantic coast, settling temporarily in Minnesota in the 17th century, then moving further into Nebraska. In the mid-19th century, they sold most of their land to the U.S. government, and designated reservations were established in their place. They farm in permanent settlements of round huts in spring and autumn, and travel in tents called tepees during the hunting season. Ten clans were integrated into the "sky" and "earth" half-tribes, and the location of their hunting camps symbolically indicates their roles. There was a hierarchy of status, but it was possible to rise in status by sharing horses, blankets, and providing food at festivals.
