O-mamori [amulet]

〘Noun〙 ("O" is a prefix) Something worn to ward off misfortune. In the olden days, mulberry or nandina wood was carved into the shape of a mallet or gourd and hung from the waist, or a bag filled with azuki beans or pebbles was attached to the back of a kimono as a protective back. Later, the amulets from shrines and temples came to be used for this purpose. Ofuda (talisman) . Gofu (sacred talisman) . Shinpu (divine talisman) . *Otogizoshi: The Origin of the Great Buddha (collected in the Koten Bunko Collection) (late Muromachi period) "Consider these statues as your parents. お‐まもり【御守】

〘名〙 (「お」は接頭語) 災難を逃れるため身につけるもの。古くは桑や南天の木で槌や瓢箪の形を作って腰にさげ、あるいは着物の背に小豆や小石を入れた袋をつけて背守りとした。のちに社寺の守り札をその目的に使うようになった。御札(おふだ)。護符。御符(ごふう)。神符(しんぷ)。※御伽草子・大仏の縁起(古典文庫所収)(室町末)「此像を父母と見よ。定て汝か父母の、かけさせつらんとて、御守りより取出し」
