[ I ] This refers to the phenomenon in which two or more substances exist that have the same molecular formula but different structures and therefore different physical or chemical properties; compounds in this relationship are called isomers. The phenomenon of isomerism was first discovered around 1823-1824, when F. Wöhler and J. Liebig independently studied silver cyanate and silver fulminate, which have different properties, and discovered that both have the same molecular formula. Isomers are broadly divided into structural isomers and stereoisomers. Structural isomers are isomers that differ in the bonding order of atoms, and are further classified into carbon chain isomers, positional isomers, functional group isomers, tautomers, and others. Stereoisomers are divided into isomers based on the difference in the spatial arrangement of atoms or atomic groups (optical isomers, geometric isomers) and isomers based on the difference in the spatial conformation (conformational isomers, rotational isomers). However, conformational isomers that cannot be isolated separately at room temperature may not be classified as isomers. Wöhler(ウェーラー)とJ.
