A former town in Minamisaku District, eastern Nagano Prefecture. A long and narrow town stretching from the border with Gunma Prefecture to the eastern slopes of Mt. Tateshina, with the Chikuma River flowing north through the center. The Koumi Line passes through the town. In the past, it was a junction of the Saku-Koshu Kaido and the Bushu Kaido, which crosses Jikkoku Pass. Flower cultivation is thriving here, and the town produces chrysanthemums, carnations, roses, and more. In March 2005, it merged with Yachiho Village, Minamisaku District, to become a town, Sakuho Town. Area: 122.11 km2 . Population: 8,692 (2003). 長野県東部,南佐久郡の旧町。群馬県境から蓼科(たてしな)山東斜面にわたる細長い町で,中央部を千曲川が北流する。小海(こうみ)線が通じる。古くは佐久甲州街道と十石(じっこく)峠越えの武州街道の分岐点。花卉(かき)の栽培が盛んで,菊,カーネーション,バラなどを産する。2005年3月南佐久郡八千穂村と合併し町制,佐久穂町となる。122.11km2。8692人(2003)。
