A group or people whose job it was to orally recite ancient myths, history, and legends that had been passed down in the pre-written world. In ancient Japan, they were local people who were subordinate to local chiefs. During the Heian period, they were summoned from all over the country to perform Kokotoba (ancient words of poetry). Kokotoba were stories similar to norito (prayer prayers), and some were in the style of songs. It is thought that Hieda no Are, who recited the Kojiki, was a similar figure to a storyteller.
