A substitution reaction by a nucleophilic reagent. It is also called the S N reaction. An example is the reaction in which, when ethyl bromide is reacted with sodium hydroxide, the bromine is replaced by the hydroxyl group, which is a nucleophilic reagent, to produce ethyl alcohol.
