Gold Coast

A former British colony in West Africa, this coastal area stretches from Axim in the west along the Gulf of Guinea to the Volta River in the east. It is also known as the Gold Coast. It was named this way because it was considered a gold producing area around the 17th and 18th centuries. At the end of the 15th century, the Portuguese built Elmina Fort here and used it as a base for trading gold, slaves, ivory, and other goods. The Netherlands, Sweden, and Britain then advanced there and competed with each other, but in the 19th century, Britain became the most powerful, establishing the Gold Coast Colony in 1874. It gained independence as the Republic of Ghana in March 1957.

西アフリカ、ギニア湾岸の西はアキシムから東はボルタ川に至る海岸地帯で、旧イギリス植民地。ゴールド・コーストGold Coastともいう。17～18世紀ごろ、金の産出地とみなされて、このような地名がつけられた。15世紀末にポルトガル人がこの地にエルミナ城塞(じょうさい)を建設し、金、奴隷、象牙(ぞうげ)などの貿易の拠点とした。その後オランダ、スウェーデン、イギリスが進出、競合したが、19世紀にはイギリスがもっとも強力となり、1874年にゴールド・コースト植民地を建設した。1957年3月ガーナ共和国として独立した。
