A former British colony in West Africa, this coastal area stretches from Axim in the west along the Gulf of Guinea to the Volta River in the east. It is also known as the Gold Coast. It was named this way because it was considered a gold producing area around the 17th and 18th centuries. At the end of the 15th century, the Portuguese built Elmina Fort here and used it as a base for trading gold, slaves, ivory, and other goods. The Netherlands, Sweden, and Britain then advanced there and competed with each other, but in the 19th century, Britain became the most powerful, establishing the Gold Coast Colony in 1874. It gained independence as the Republic of Ghana in March 1957. [Hiromitsu Nakamura] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
