Sculptures made from basic geometric shapes, created in the United States from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. The name comes from the exhibition Primary Structures: Young American and British Sculptors, organized by Kynaston McShine at the Jewish Museum in New York in 1966. 1960年代後半から70年代初頭にかけてアメリカで制作された,幾何学的な基本形体から成る彫刻のこと。〈基本構造〉の意。66年にニューヨークのジューイッシュ美術館で開かれたマックシャインKynaston McShineの企画による〈プライマリー・ストラクチャーズ――アメリカとイギリスの若い彫刻家〉展が名称の起り。素材は金属,木材などのほかにプレクシグラス,ステンレス,プラスチックなどの工業用素材も使われる。
