…In the autumn of 331 BCE, Alexander the Great, who was marching into northern Mesopotamia, encountered the Persian army of Darius III on the plains near Gaugamela (Tell Gomer) on the left bank of the Tigris River, and defeated them again after the Battle of Issus (333 BCE). Alexander pursued Darius, who had left the battlefield in the middle of the battle, all night long to Arbela, about 90 km south, but was unsuccessful. However, Darius' authority was completely lost, and Alexander thereafter officially called himself "King of Asia." This battle is sometimes called the Battle of Arbela. …
