A town in the northeastern part of Thailand, facing the Mekong River that forms the border with Laos. It is the capital of Nongkhai Province. It faces Vientiane, the capital of Laos, and plays an important role in transporting goods to Laos. In 1994, a bridge was built over the Mekong River connecting Thailand and Laos. There is a railway and a highway leading to the town from Bangkok. It is also a trading center for rice, tapioca, and tobacco. Formerly called Bang Phai, the town was renamed during the reign of King Rama III (1824-51) because of the presence of a large swamp (Nong). Population: 59,776 (2000).
