An annual grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm is hard, clump-like, and 30-80 cm tall. From August to October, the culm bears palmate inflorescences at the end of the culm, producing 1-6 spikelets. The spikelets have 3-10 florets, are flattened and sessile, and are arranged in two rows on one side of the inflorescence. The fruits are pouch-shaped caryopses with horizontal wrinkles. They grow in wastelands and roadsides from Honshu to Okinawa and Ogasawara, and are widely distributed from tropical to temperate regions of the world. The name is a reference to the weak-looking crabgrass. It is the original species of finger millet E. coracana (L.) Gaertn., which is sometimes cultivated, has large fruits, and spikes that can reach a width of 1 cm.
