Koyasan University

Private school. Its predecessor was Koyasan Kogi Daigakurin, which was founded in 1886 (Meiji 19) at Mount Koya, a mountain of learning established by Kobo Daishi Kukai. In 1926 (Taisho 15), it was approved as Koyasan University under the University Act, managed by the Koyasan Kangaku Foundation. In 1949 (Showa 24), it transitioned to a new university system. As of 2010 (Heisei 22), it has a Faculty of Literature with a Department of Esoteric Buddhism, a Graduate School of Literature with two majors, Esoteric Buddhism and Buddhist Studies, and a two-year course for short-term training of Shingon Buddhist priests. It does not focus solely on training religious practitioners, but aims to cultivate human resources who will contribute widely to society through the cultivation of personalities in accordance with the Buddhist spirit. It is located at 385 Koyasan, Koya-cho, Ito-gun, Wakayama Prefecture.

私立。弘法大師(こうぼうだいし)空海が開いた学山としての高野山に、1886年（明治19）創立された高野山古義大学林が前身。1926年（大正15）大学令により高野山勧学財団の経営による高野山大学として認可された。1949年（昭和24）新制大学に移行。2010年（平成22）時点で、密教学科からなる文学部と、密教学、仏教学の2専攻からなる文学研究科の大学院、さらに真言宗僧侶(そうりょ)の短期養成を目的とした2年コースの別科がある。宗教家の養成だけを主眼とせず、仏教精神に即した人格陶冶(とうや)を通じ広く社会に貢献する人材の育成を目ざしている。所在地は和歌山県伊都(いと)郡高野町高野山385。
