From the early 19th century, it became a bathing spot for New York City's wealthy, and soon luxury hotels, casinos, entertainment halls, and ice cream parlors were built along the beach. From the 1880s, it became a major entertainment center for the general public, filled with roller coasters, merry-go-rounds, observation cars, and hot dog stands.
