A city in the northwestern part of Iran, in East Azerbaijan Province. It is located near the southeastern shore of Lake Urmia, in a water-filled valley at the foot of Mount Sahand (3,700 m). It flourished as the center of a vast fruit-producing region and exported dried fruits. Its modern development has been rapid in recent decades. In the Middle Ages, it was under Turk rule, and in the 13th century, it was ruled by Hulagu, founder of the Ilkhanate, and was its capital. Notable ruins include five tomb towers built between the 12th and 14th centuries, the oldest of which, Badesorkh (built in 1147), is one of the most beautiful brick buildings in Iran. There are also ruins of an observatory (built in 1259) on a hill in the western suburbs. Maragheh marble, a unique stone with yellow, pink, greenish or milky white coloring and red or green veining, known as Maragheh marble, is mainly quarried in Azarshahr in the north.
