A type of footwear worn by nobles. The name is used in contrast to deep geta. It is worn with attire such as sokutai, ikan, noshi, and kariginu. In ancient and medieval times, the style was boat-shaped, with a rounded front and narrowed back. In addition to kurikawa no kutsu, which were made of leather and lacquered black, so-called mokuri, which were made of wood and lacquered black, were used. White plain silk or white twill was used as the inner sole, but for those of nobility and above, floating fabric of the same quality as the outer hakama was used. In the early modern period, shallow geta were made of wood, or made of paper pasted on the top, so-called harinuki, with a paulownia wood sole and black lacquer. The rounded front top became linear, and the overall size became large, so a large instep was attached to prevent them from slipping off.
