Sauer - Carl Ortwin Sauer

Japanese: サウアー - さうあー(英語表記)Carl Ortwin Sauer
Sauer - Carl Ortwin Sauer

An American geographer of German descent. He studied at the University of Berlin and received his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1915. In 1923 he became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he pioneered a new field of human geography by incorporating the fields of cultural anthropology and ecology into historical geography. He was particularly interested in Latin America, and published numerous studies on American Indians. In 1940 he became president of the Association of American Geographers, and in 1956 he became its honorary president, and in 1957 he became professor emeritus at the University of California. His research on the origins and spread of agriculture, which he lectured at the Association of American Geographers in 1960, has been translated into Japanese and is also being introduced in Japan.
