[Vestiges of nomadic culture]
It is believed that most of the Turks were still nomadic when they first migrated to Anatolia, but by the 16th century many of them gradually began to settle down. During the Ottoman Empire, the Turk nomads were called Turkmen or Aşiret to the east of the Kizilırmak River, which flows through central Anatolia, and Yürük to the west (including the Balkans). The Turkmen maintained their tribal organization relatively well and formed large groups, but the Yürüks split into small groups and were controlled by the central government as several military organizations.

　アナトリアへ移住した当初，トルコ族の大部分は，なお遊牧生活を送っていたと推定されるが，16世紀までにその多くは，しだいに定住しはじめた。オスマン帝国時代のトルコ系遊牧民は，中央アナトリアを流れるクズルウルマク川を境に，その東にいる人びとはトルクメンTürkmenもしくはアシレットAşiret，西(バルカンも含む)にいる人びとはユルックYürükとよばれた。トルクメンは部族組織を比較的よく維持し，大きな集団を形成していたが，ユルックの場合は，小集団に分裂し，中央権力によっていくつかの軍事組織として掌握されていた。…
