Thump

Kabuki dance. Tokiwazu. Original title: Kagura Utakumoi no Kyokumari. Lyrics by Sakurada Jisuke III. Music by Kishizawa Shikisa V. Choreography by Nishikawa Minosuke. It was first performed in January 1846 (Koka 3) at the Ichimuraza in Edo by Nakamura Utaemon IV's Dontsuku and Ichimura Uzaemon 12's Daikagura master. It is a work that depicts the customs of Daikagura, a miscellaneous art form that celebrates the beginning of spring, but the main character is a country boy called "Dontsuku," and various characters appear, including the master, the flute player, the husband who is making the New Year's visit, a geisha, and a sake seller. The performance starts with the master dancing with a basket ball, followed by the dances of the geisha and the master, then Dontsuku wearing a Okame mask joins in, followed by a bell dance, a dance with the master dressed in all black and red, and ends with a group dance. The original story was taken from the first volume, "The Extermination of the Nue."
