[Rattles as musical instruments]
In musical instrumentology, this name is used to refer to idiophones that are made by shaking them back and forth, but it was originally used as a translation of the German word "rassel" or the English word "rattle." Maracas, an instrument made by putting a few pebbles inside a dried gourd or maraca fruit, attaching a handle to it and shaking it, is widely used among the native peoples of the Americas, and is a typical example of a rattle.
