Yoshitora Kawai

A socialist in the Taisho period. Born in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. His legal name was Kawae Yoshitora. His father was Zensaku and his mother Tama. After moving to various mines in places such as Ashio, Akita, and Hitachi with his father, he moved to Tokyo and joined the Kyominkai. He participated in the founding conference of the Japan Socialist League. In 1922 (Taisho 11), he joined the Japanese Communist Party when it was founded. He formed the Nankatsu Labor Association with Watanabe Masanosuke and others, and worked on labor disputes around the country. In 1923, he participated in the founding of the Japanese Communist Youth League and became its first chairman. He was always optimistic and said, "The future belongs to young people." When the Great Kanto Earthquake occurred on September 1st of the same year, he was arrested at Kameido Police Station and killed at midnight on the 4th by the 13th Narashino Cavalry Regiment of the Imperial Guard Division (Kameido Incident). <References> Kato Bunzo, Kawai Yoshitora

大正期の社会主義者。長野県上田市の出身。戸籍名は川江義虎。父は善作,母はタマ。父と共に,足尾,秋田,日立など各地の鉱山を転々としたのち上京し,曉民会に加入。日本社会主義同盟の結成大会に参加した。大正11(1922)年日本共産党の創立とともに入党した。渡辺政之輔らと南葛労働会を結成し,各地の労働争議に当たる。12年,日本共産青年同盟の創立に参加し初代委員長となる。つねに楽天的で「未来は青年のものである」といっていた。同年9月1日の関東大震災に際し,亀戸警察署に検束され,4日夜半,近衛師団習志野騎兵13連隊の手によって殺害された(亀戸事件)。<参考文献>加藤文三『川合義虎』
