1847‐1920 American banker. Born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, he emigrated to America at age 18 and later became one of America's leading bankers. As a Jew, he generously supported the promotion of Jewish education and culture, and particularly denounced the persecution of Jews in Russia. During the Russo-Japanese War, he worked hard to secure loans to Japan out of hatred for Russia. He opposed Zionism out of loyalty to America and religious reasons, but after the Balfour Declaration he supported Jewish settlement in Palestine.
