1847‐1920
American banker. Born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, he emigrated to America at age 18 and later became one of America's leading bankers. As a Jew, he generously supported the promotion of Jewish education and culture, and particularly denounced the persecution of Jews in Russia. During the Russo-Japanese War, he worked hard to secure loans to Japan out of hatred for Russia. He opposed Zionism out of loyalty to America and religious reasons, but after the Balfour Declaration he supported Jewish settlement in Palestine.

アメリカの銀行家。ドイツのフランクフルト･アム･マインに生まれ，18歳でアメリカへ移住し，のちにアメリカ有数の銀行家となった。ユダヤ教徒で，ユダヤ人の教育･文化の振興に多大の援助を惜しまず，またとくにロシアでのユダヤ人迫害を弾劾した。日露戦争にあたってはロシアへの憎悪から対日借款実現に努力した。アメリカに対する忠誠心と宗教上の理由からシオニズムに反対したが，バルフォア宣言後はパレスティナへのユダヤ人の入植を支持した。
