A city in the state of Saxony in eastern Germany. It was part of the former East Germany from 1949 to 1990. It is located at an altitude of 210 meters along the Neisse River, which flows along the border with Poland, and has a population of 61,600 (2000). It is located at 15 degrees east longitude and is a standard time city in Central European time. After World War II, the former East German government recognized the Oder-Neisse Rhine border, and the right bank of the Neisse River came under Polish rule and is called Zgorzelec (population 35,100, 2002 estimate). There are various industries, including vehicle, optical equipment, electrical, and machine manufacturing, as well as spinning, weaving, and clothing industries. The town was founded around 1100 and has been the center of eastern Upper Lusatia since the 13th century, and had tariff autonomy and a monopoly on blue dye in trade with Bohemia and Silesia.
