Kanayama Minato

...Located on the border between the old Hida and Mino provinces, it developed as a post town at the junction of the Hida Highway and the Gujo Highway. The Kanayamaminato Kanayama Office, which stopped timber going down the river and imposed taxes, was located there from the Kyoroku era (1528-32) until the end of the Edo period. The Iwaya Dam on the Maze River, completed in 1976, is one of Japan's largest rockfill dams, but the construction of the dam has caused villages to leave and the population to decline significantly.
