Also known as the recruitment phenomenon, this phenomenon occurs when hearing loss is caused by damage to the hair cells of the inner ear. An abnormality occurs in the relationship between the physical intensity of a sound, i.e., the amount of sound energy that can be measured with a measuring device such as a sound level meter, and the sense of loudness that arises when hearing that sound, so that as the sound intensity gradually increases, the sense of loudness of the sound increases abnormally. Subjectively, the person cannot hear soft sounds, but slightly louder sounds reverberate in the ears and seem abnormally loud. When people with hearing loss due to inner ear damage use hearing aids, the sounds often reverberate and sound noisy, and it is often difficult to adjust the amplification of the hearing aids, and this phenomenon is one of the reasons for this.
