Mizoram [State] (English spelling)

A state in the northeastern corner of India. Area: 21,000 km2, population: 690,000 (1991). Capital: Aizawl. The Mizo Hills, at the northern end of the Arakan Range, are mountainous areas that run north to south and cover almost the entire state, with several narrow valley plains stretching between them. The hills are mostly 150-900m above sea level, with the highest point being about 1,600m. The area receives a lot of rain, with an annual precipitation of more than 2,500mm, and in the central part of the hills it exceeds 4,000mm. The mountain slopes are covered with evergreen broad-leaved trees and bamboo. The inhabitants are mainly the Lushai, with the Panay, Chakma, and Liang tribes living there, all of whom speak a language belonging to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family.

インド北東端の州。面積2万1000km2，人口69万(1991)。州都はアイザウルAizawl。アラカン山脈の北端部にあたるミゾ丘陵を構成する諸山地が南北走して，ほぼ全域を覆い，その間を数条の狭長な谷底平野が延びる。丘陵はほぼ標高150～900mで，最高所でも1600mほどである。年降水量2500mm以上の多雨地帯で，丘陵中央部では4000mmを超える。山地斜面は常緑広葉樹および竹に覆われている。住民はルシャイLushai族を主とし，そのほかパネイ，チャクマ，リアン族などが居住し，いずれもシナ･チベット語族のチベット･ビルマ語派に属する言語を話す。
