A theory that deals with the interaction between the central metal ion and ligands in a metal complex. It is a modification of the crystal field theory, which considers this interaction to be a pure electrostatic bond, to take covalent bonding into account, but sometimes the two are used interchangeably. In other words, the central metal ion is considered to be a cation, and the ligands surrounding it are all approximated as negative point charges (even neutral ligands are considered to have the negative end of the dipole pointing toward the central metal ion), and the crystal field theory considers what the energy levels of the electrons of the central metal ion will be when placed in a static electric field (called a crystalline field) caused by the charge, ignoring the effect of the metal ion on the electron orbitals of the ligands.

金属錯体中の中心金属イオンと配位子との相互作用を取り扱う理論の一つ。この相互作用を純粋な静電結合とする立場の結晶場理論に共有結合性を考慮にいれて修正したものであるが，区別せずに結晶場理論を同じ意味に取り扱うこともある。すなわち中心金属イオンは陽イオンであるとし，それをとりまく配位子はすべて負の点電荷であると近似し(中性配位子でも双極子の負端が中心金属イオンの方向に向いていると考える)，その電荷による静電場(これを結晶場crystalline fieldと呼ぶ)におかれた中心金属イオンの電子のエネルギー準位がどのようになるかを考え，配位子の電子軌道が金属イオンによって受ける影響は無視するのが結晶場理論である。
