965-1039 His Latin name was Alhazen. He was a physicist who excelled in mathematics and observational experiments. Born in Basra, he was invited by the Fatimid caliph Hakim to study the Nile, claiming that he could control the water level of the Nile. However, when he found out that this was impossible, he pretended to be insane and devoted himself to scientific research. He died in Cairo. He produced numerous works on physics, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy. In his work On Vision, he described the anatomy of the eye and solved complex problems in reflective and refractive optics. This book was translated into Latin and introduced to the Western world, where it had a major influence on such figures as R. Bacon, Witelo, and Kepler.
