Rexea prometheoides

Japanese: カゴカマス（英語表記）Rexea prometheoides

A marine fish of the Perciformes order, family Acanthidae (illustration). Its English name is silver kingfish due to its body color. Although it has the name of a barracuda, it is not a member of the barracuda family, but is more closely related to tuna and mackerel. In the waters off the coast of Japan, it inhabits relatively deep areas of the Pacific coast, such as Suruga Bay, Kumano Nada, Tosa Bay, and Okinawa, and is also found in the waters off the coast of Australia and New Zealand. Its body is laterally compressed and slightly elongated, bluish-gray with a silvery-white luster. The lateral line is divided into two below the base of the fifth spine of the first dorsal fin, and the lower one runs vertically down the side of the body to the caudal peduncle.

スズキ目クロタチカマス科の海産魚（イラスト）。英名は体色からsilver kingfishという。カマスの名がついているが，カマスの仲間ではなく，マグロやサバに近縁な魚である。日本近海では駿河湾，熊野灘，土佐湾，沖縄などの太平洋岸の比較的深いところに生息し，また，オーストラリア，ニュージーランド近海にも分布している。体は側扁してやや延長し，青灰色で銀白色の光沢がある。側線が第1背びれの第5棘（きよく）の基底下で二つに分かれ，下方のものは体側を縦走して尾柄部にまで達する。
