World affairs record - Sejikenbunroku

Also called "Sejikenmonroku," this is a book of social criticism written in the late Edo period. It has 7 volumes. It was written around 1816 (Bunka 13). The author is said to have been a Buyoinshi (hermit) living in Edo, but the author is unknown. The book divides the topics into "samurai, peasants, temple and shrine practitioners, medical practice, Onmyodo (Onmyodo), the blind, lawsuits for public affairs, townspeople, prostitutes in red light districts, Kabuki, rice, miscellaneous grains, and other products, the divine land of Japan, those who died untimely deaths, and the affairs of the common people," and provides scathing criticism of each of them, but its stance is restorationist. It is used by researchers as a book that can provide information on the actual living conditions of various social classes, including the conditions of villages and Edo in the late Edo period. It is included in "Early Modern Social and Economic Series" 1, "Nihon Keizai Series" 3 and 4, and "Nihon Shomin Seikatsu Shiryo Shusei" 8.
