Country and Western is a type of popular music whose main audience is the white American masses living in rural areas. It is also called Country and Western, or C&W for short. It is a type of music that was handed down mainly in the Appalachian Mountains, but it developed into modern folk music in the 1920s and 1930s, when British folk songs, which had been handed down mainly in the Appalachian Mountains, came into contact with black music in the South and adopted a blues sensibility and the banjo, an instrument of African origin. It was encouraged by the spread of records and radio in the 1920s and 1930s, and developed into modern folk music. In the very early days, it was difficult to draw a clear line between this and folk music, but in 1927, Mississippi-born Jimmie Rodgers recorded a sentimental song with guitar and vocals, which became popular, and it quickly grew into commercial music performed by professional singers.
