…Born in Tübingen, he studied law and literature and became a lawyer. He also studied old German and French folk songs and folk tales, made a great contribution to collecting old songs, and taught literature at university. He formed an early friendship with Gustav Schwab (1792-1850) and others, and wrote folk-like poems and masterpieces of ballads such as "The Blind King" and "The Poet's Curse," becoming a representative poet of the Swabian school of late romanticism. Many of his poems are familiar to us through compositions by Schubert and Schumann. …
