A popular religious movement that was the forerunner of the Investiture Controversy in 11th and 12th century Europe. The name Patalia was a derogatory term derived from the "vagrant market" where second-hand clothes (patée in Milanese dialect) were bought and sold. It began in 1045 when Henry III selected Guido da Velate as Archbishop of Milan. This gave the people and some of the clergy who opposed simony and priestly widowhood an opportunity to unite. The movement was led by Anselmo da Baggio (later Alexander II) and others, but when the leaders were expelled, the dispute was left to the Pope's discretion.
